About the project

The T2D Project design features two sets of twin tunnels – the Southern Tunnels and the Northern Tunnels – that will be connected by an open lowered motorway. The motorway and the tunnels will all have three lanes operating in each direction, with a combined total distance of 10.5km.

In the south, a tunnel for northbound traffic will run parallel to a tunnel for southbound traffic from Norrie Avenue in Clovelly Park to just south of the South Road tram overpass in Glandore. In the north, two tunnels will run parallel to each other from near Sir Donald Bradman Drive in Hilton to Ashwin Parade in Torrensville; one for northbound traffic and one for southbound traffic.

The tunnels

The Southern Tunnels run between the open lowered motorway at Darlington to just south of Anzac Highway in Glandore and provide key connectivity to Anzac Highway. This section includes about 4km of twin three-lane tunnels, one travelling northbound and one travelling southbound.

The Northern Tunnels run between James Congdon Drive and the existing open motorway south of Grange Road. This section includes about 2.2km of twin three-lane tunnels, one travelling northbound and one travelling southbound.

Open motorway linking the tunnels

The open motorway connects to key routes such as Richmond Road and James Congdon Drive and will provide critical east-west connectivity and links to key destinations such as Adelaide Airport. This section of open lowered motorway is just over 2.5km in length.

Going underground

The T2D Project involves the construction of two separate sections of tunnels – the Southern Tunnels and the Northern Tunnels – connected by an open lowered motorway.

Each section will have one tunnel travelling northbound, and one tunnel travelling southbound. The motorway and tunnels will each have three lanes operating in both directions with a speed limit of 80km/h.

The entire project has a combined total distance of 10.5km. The Northern and Southern Tunnels will have a combined length of approximately 6.2km, making more than 50% of T2D tunnels.

The T2D Project is expected to generate significant economic growth by creating jobs during and after construction, boosting local businesses, and enhancing property values in surrounding areas.
