What is planned?

The Manton Street and Adam Street junction upgrade will provide additional capacity for citybound traffic by adding an additional left turn lane from Manton Street into Adam Street (eastbound).

It will also improve public transport efficiency, pedestrian and cyclist safety, and access to the River Torrens Linear Path.

Concept design

Concept design of proposed changes

Removal of the right turn access from Manton Street into Adam Street

Improving access within the current intersection footprint will require replacing the current right turn from Manton Street into Adam Street with a second left turn lane (city bound). This will significantly improve safety and functionality of the intersection for access into the city and beyond. Access to Adam Street from Manton Street will be maintained via a new protected right turn lane at the Richard Street junction.

To minimise impacts to traffic movements, the new Richard Street protected right turn lane will be constructed before the right turn from Manton Street onto Adam Street is closed.

East-west access in both directions along Adam Street will be retained.

Pedestrian and cyclists

The concept design includes improvements to pedestrian safety by re-aligning the existing five separate pedestrian crossing points to three direct crossing points.

The cycling access to the River Torrens Linear Path from Manton Street will be improved via a new cycle lane to footpath ramp and access via the improved pedestrian crossing.

The introduction of a new right turn access to Richard Street will also include a pedestrian refuge to assist pedestrians crossing Richard Street along Manton Street.

Public Transport

The additional left turn lane from Manton Street into Adam Street (eastbound) will improve access to Port Road and improve the efficiency of the GO Zone bus services which operate via Manton Street and Adams Street.

Project timing

The work program has been designed to fit between upcoming major local events. This will minimise disruption to local traffic movements and event attendees as much as possible.

Early works are anticipated to commence in June 2023. Major works are scheduled to commence in mid-August 2023, after the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Project completion is expected in November 2023 (weather permitting) prior to the opening of the Riverbank Christmas Lights display.
