An early works program is underway on the T2D Project. This work includes utility service relocations, ground investigations and surveying. We will notify nearby local residents and businesses in advance of any activities planned for their area. We will also work to keep disruption to a minimum.

Detours, signage and traffic controllers will be in place. This will help to:

  • manage traffic flow
  • ensure motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are able to safely navigate around our work areas.

Service relocations

To enable construction of the T2D Project, we have commenced relocating utility services. These utility services include power, water, gas, wastewater and telecommunications.

Service relocation works have begun at the southern end of the project. New utility services have been installed in side streets. This allows existing utility services in South Road to be decommissioned. These works will help clear the way for the southern portal, Southern Tunnels launch site and construction laydown area.

Ground investigations

Ground investigations are crucial to the successful construction of the T2D Project.

Investigation of below-surface earth and groundwater will enhance the understanding of the geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions to be encountered when the motorway’s tunnels are excavated.

In February 2023, we completed phase 4 of the ground investigations project. We have been working on this project since August 2020. We have drilled more than 635 boreholes, reaching depths of 10 to 100 metres. Data from these investigations will inform the detailed design of the tunnels and lowered motorway.

Other on-site, pre-construction works are continuing along the corridor, including

  • the relocation of utility services
  • the beginning of site clearance.

This will help prepare for major works at the southern end of the project.

Surveying

Over the next few months, our engineering survey teams will be along South Road and adjacent streets between:

    • Norrie Avenue, Clovelly Park
    • Tonsley Boulevard, Tonsley.

Survey teams are collecting information within the existing corridor and surrounding areas, including:

    • on kerbs and footpaths
    • underground and overhead services
    • any other relevant surface features.

We use surveying personnel and electronic equipment to do this. The information will help in developing the project design.

As part of the surveying works, you may notice different symbols painted onto the footpaths and roadways. These markings help us to locate assets in the ground.

There should be no impact to residences or businesses whilst undertaking these works. The extent of the survey works and/or markings on the ground do not necessarily correspond to areas affected by the project in the final design.

    Environmental monitoring stations

The T2D Project will construct several environmental monitoring stations along the corridor. These stations will provide a baseline for the pre-existing environmental conditions before construction.

The environmental monitoring stations will be carefully located to:

    • minimise any impact on the local community
    • ensure accurate measurement of key environmental parameters.

The stations will be designed as low-profile transportable units. They will contain a range of sensitive environmental monitoring instruments installed within a small secure compound.

No noise or fumes of any kind will be emitted by these stations. They will be attended infrequently for maintenance purposes during normal business hours.

It is envisaged that these stations will be positioned on site during April 2023 and be retained until 2031.
