Major construction at road surface will start in the south from January 2025. Early works will also continue along the broader alignment ahead of major construction starting later in the year.
The first tunnel boring machine (TBM) is scheduled to arrive in late 2025. With three TBMs now planned for the project, we can construct both southern and northern tunnels at the same time. We can reasonably expect to not only complete the project by the 2031 deadline, but even earlier.
Activities are ramping up in early 2025 as we establish three key surface-level construction precincts along the alignment: southern, central and northern.
Construction activities started in the southern precinct in January 2025.
Construction will begin in the central and northern precincts later in the year.

We have completed extensive work to identify a preferred alignment and configuration for this section of the North-South Corridor. This work has long supported a need for a motorway solution to ease congestion on South Road.
Options explored for the T2D alignment and configuration included:
an open motorway
an elevated motorway
an 'offline' option using major arterial roads
cut-and-cover tunnelling construction technology
a dual corridor (using South Road and Marion Road)
a single long tunnel.
