Project evolution
Extensive work has been undertaken to identify a preferred alignment and configuration for the T2D section of the North-South Corridor. This work has long supported a need for a motorway solution to alleviate congestion on South Road.
Options explored for the T2D alignment and configuration have included:
- an open motorway
- an elevated motorway
- an 'offline' option using major arterial roads
- cut-and-cover tunnelling construction technology
- a dual corridor (using South Road and Marion Road)
- a single long tunnel.
The preferred design uses a combination of tunnels, lowered and ground-level motorway, as well as overpasses and underpasses. This protects cultural sites, opens up suburbs to new recreational spaces and minimises the extent of property acquisition as much as possible. It will also result in citywide benefits, both now and into the future, for commerce and commuters across the road network as trucks, transport and interstate traffic use the final 10.5km section of the North-South Corridor.
This design was developed into the T2D Reference Design, which was released in November 2021.
Following community feedback on elements of the design and ongoing technical inputs, the design was further refined as part of the State Government’s Project Review and released for public consultation in December 2022.
Key design changes announced were to the southern portal of the Southern Tunnel, the Anzac Highway connection, James Congdon Drive connection and the northern portal of the Northern Tunnel.
